LES FOURS À CHAUXLes Monts - 61210 HABLOVILLE
On the road from the 'Monts' to 'Noirville', old lime kilns provided building materials, amendment for agriculture, and limestone for the forges of Putanges. These lime kilns built in the 18th century are the remains, in good condition, of what was a prosperous industry in the 19th century. The limestone subsoil of Habloville provided the raw material, limestone, necessary for the manufacture of lime, which was mixed with river sand for the masonry joints. This last was also used to amend the siliceous soils of the region, very close to 'le Houlme'. Faced with the growing use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture and of cement in construction, these ovens have been turned off since 1870. |
